Junior Jersey Judo Stars!
I wrote a fun profile of three young judo-competing siblings for the Union City Reporter. Who knows, we could be seeing them in the Olympics someday!
Kitchen Cousins Undercover
HGTV reality stars Anthony Carrino and John Colaneri, a.k.a. the Kitchen Cousins, have a brand-new show debuting this month, Cousins Undercover. I interviewed the Jersey City-based cousins for the summer 2013 issue of JCI Magazine. Sure, the show was called Undercover Overhaul at that point. Things change. Focus groups and the like.
Escape From Desire, episode 1
I was aware of Stephen Vesecky’s band #Poundsign# well before Stephen and I became good friends. We recently sat down for a wide-ranging conversation involving much silliness and a little bit of wisdom. At the end, we duet (!) on a Smiths classic. In theory, this is the first episode of a new podcast, Escape […]
Oh Sandy: An Anthology of Humor for a Serious Purpose
An essay of mine, “Holy Hoboken, Baptized by Sandy,” was accepted into Oh Sandy: An Anthology of Humor for a Serious Purpose, which is available in print and Kindle formats. In it, I chronicle my hopefully amusing observations of religion’s role in that post-Sandy week here in Hoboken. The good, the bad, and the odd. […]
Spotlight on Greenville
I’m proud of this neighborhood spotlight I wrote for the winter issue of NEW Magazine (which is being rebranded as JCI Magazine with the spring issue). The Greenville section of Jersey City has a fascinating past which urban decay has made many people forget. Business owners, artists, and community activists—a few of who I now […]
Graffiti! Young Filmmakers! Jersey City!
All this and more in the lead story I wrote for today’s Jersey City Independent. They’re good kids and I really enjoyed meeting them!
And This Time I Got Paid for Walking
Here is my first article for the Hudson Reporter newspapers, about a guided walk from Weehawken to Hoboken. I took the photographs also, and yes, even the corny headline is mine.
Honest Abe’s Guide to Presidential Elections
Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, Green Party members, independents, and everybody else can at least agree on one thing: This is the best book about presidential elections ever published anywhere! A sequel of sorts to this year’s Honest Abe’s Funny Money Book, I once again teamed up with the wonderful illustrator Jim Paillot. The book is available […]
What Happened to Jackson Avenue?
I wrote the lead story in today’s Jersey City Independent. It deals with a new documentary made by 17 kids and teens in the Friends of the Lifers Youth Corp in Greenville, Jersey City. They hope to turn their neighborhood around.
Hey, Look, Another Article About Music, and This One Is Longer
Here’s a profile of the twee-pop band the Marshmallows that I wrote for the Jersey City Independent.
